Born and raised in Shanghai in the 1980s, Huili (Cindy) had never thought that China’s rise would come true so quickly even beyond her wildest imagination. In 2011, it was Huili’s first time visiting the U.S. and she spent one semester at UNC at Chapel Hill as an MBA exchange student. The big gap between China and the U.S. as well as the dynamic American culture impressed her a lot at that time. However, during the past ten years, Huili experienced rapid economic growth in China and witnessed the challenge it brings about to the current world order, e.g., Taiwan issue, Hong Kong anti-extradition movement, South China Sea conflict, Sino-U.S. trade war, etc. More often than not, Huili hears many criticisms about China and the Chinese government from the western media, but she does not always agree with these points. As a Chinese catholic businesswoman who has plenty of international experience, she believes that she is able to view many international issues from different angles. Therefore, she joined ACE’s Foreign Policy: Asia team this summer and hopes to produce with neutral and objective research.
