Emmanuel (he/him/his) was born and raised in Jalisco, Mexico, and immigrated to the United States in 2017. He is a junior at The University of Michigan majoring in international studies with minors in translation and Latin American studies. In his free time, he enjoys painting landscapes, cooking new recipes, reading mystery novels, and spending as much time outdoors as Michigan allows him to.
An immigrant himself, Emmanuel has developed a strong sense of global citizenship. During his years participating in debate championships, he learned about the role of the international community in shaping our world’s most daunting challenges. Emmanuel became a non-governmental organization (NGO) representative at the United Nations, which convinced him to pursue a career in international affairs and human rights. His advocacy work includes volunteering as a Spanish translator for refugees at Freedom House Detroit and working as a bilingual tutor for Hispanic and migrant students. He is also a staff writer for the Michigan Journal of International Affairs, covering foreign policy and politics in Latin America. This summer, he will be completing an internship with AsylumConnect, a non-profit organization that serves LGBTQ+ refugees.
Emmanuel decided to become an ACE Fellow because he is convinced that citizen engagement must have a global outlook. Through his work in the Foreign Policy: Central & Latin America team, he hopes to raise awareness of how interconnected our hemisphere is.
