Nhelia Alemo, University of Iowa

Nhelia Alemo is a second-year student at the University of Iowa, pursuing a Political Science major with a certificate in Political Risk Analysis. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nhelia’s exposure to political instability inspired her deep interest in politics, human rights, and public policy. She is particularly passionate about immigration, humanitarian, and international law, driven by a strong commitment to social justice and advocacy. Nhelia has gained hands-on experience working with marginalized communities through both legal and nonprofit initiatives, further shaping her dedication to equity.

Fluent in Lingala and conversational in French, Nhelia is dedicated to giving back to her home country through plans to establish a nonprofit supporting displaced people. She aspires to pursue a Master’s in Public Affairs and a JD after undergrad, with hopes of gaining professional experience in international courts such as the ICC or ICJ. In her free time, she enjoys traveling to new destinations, watching K-dramas, listening to music, and learning chess.
